The Indo Daily: Battle for Barne | Ep 1- John Magnier's bitter land row and the 15m handshake deal
Briefly

The Barne Estate in Tipperary, owned by the Thomson-Moore family for nearly 400 years, is in dispute. John Magnier, a billionaire, seeks to enforce a €15 million deal with Richard Thomson-Moore, while alleging that a subsequent €22.5 million deal made with Maurice Regan is unlawful. The case unfolds in the High Court, highlighting the significant implications of ownership, historical ties, and personal agreements. It represents a notable event within the Irish legal system, involving prominent individuals and a storied family estate.
For nearly 400 years, the Barne Estate in Tipperary has been under the ownership of the Thomson-Moore family, going all the way back to 1654. Today, the future of the 750-acre property is the subject of a trial that has seen a bitter land dispute play out before the High Court. John Magnier, the bloodstock billionaire, and two of his children, are seeking to enforce a handshake deal agreed between Mr Magnier and Richard Thomson-Moore to buy Barne Estate.
Mr Magnier contends that the €15m deal agreed in his Coolmore home in Tipperary on August 22, 2023 with Mr Thomson-Moore is binding. He argues that a later €22.5m deal Mr Thomson-Moore and his family trust agreed with Maurice Regan, the US-based Kerry building tycoon, is "unlawful".
The contentious nature of the deals and the involvement of high-profile individuals, including a billionaire and a historic family estate, highlights the drama and significance of this case.
Today on The Indo Daily, in the first of a two-part special, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Mark Tighe, journalist with the Sunday Independent, to discuss one of the most dramatic and colourful cases to hit the Irish courts in recent memory.
