President Donald Trump announced 10% tariffs starting Feb. 1 rising to 25% on June 1 for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland until a "Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland." The announcement followed troop deployments to Greenland. President Emmanuel Macron will request EU activation of the anti-coercion instrument as retaliation. The anti-coercion instrument, adopted in 2023 and never used, could limit trade in goods and services and target foreign direct investment and financial markets. EU officials will meet to decide how to respond, and the tariffs may jeopardize a prior July trade deal.
