Charlotte Niddam, believed to be 15, has been confirmed as one of the 40 victims of a New Year's Day fire at the Crans-Montana ski resort. Her family announced her death with great sadness and said funeral arrangements would follow, most likely on Thursday in Paris. Charlotte previously attended Immanuel College and the Jewish Free School and had been working as a babysitter in the area. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper offered condolences. Swiss officials said all 40 victims have been identified and President Guy Parmelin called the blaze one of the country's worst tragedies. Prosecutors said sparklers on champagne bottles carried too close to the ceiling were the likely cause.
