Sweden's Moderates to vote on pushing for Euro membership
"The board of Sweden's ruling Moderate is calling on the party to vote on launching an inquiry into switch from the krona to the euro, although the party's vice-chair, finance minister Elisabeth Svantesson, doesn't think it will happen any time soon. An inquiry as to whether Sweden should join the Euro is among the points the party board has put on the agenda for discussion at the party's annual congress in Vasteras between October 23rd and October 26th."
"Svantesson told the TT newswire that the issue was "not on the table," but that it was still worth looking into the arguments for and against. "Let's look into the pros and cons," she said. "The fact that the geopolitical and economic situation worldwide is changing is a reason for doing so.""
"Among the Tido parties made up of the Moderates, Christian Democrats and Liberals in government and the Sweden Democrats supporting the Liberals are in favour of joining the euro while the Sweden Democrats are against. The Christian Democrats have no official standpoint."
The Moderate Party board has proposed a vote to launch an inquiry into switching Sweden's currency from the krona to the euro. The inquiry would assess all relevant aspects, explicitly including geopolitical and security concerns. The proposal places the question on the agenda for the party's annual congress in Vasteras between October 23 and October 26. Finance minister and party vice-chair Elisabeth Svantesson said the matter is not currently on the table but supported examining the pros and cons. Party and allied groupings hold mixed positions on euro adoption, with some in favour and others opposed.
