In Indian Kashmir, a sudden rainstorm has resulted in at least 34 fatalities and over 200 missing. The disaster struck in Chashoti, Kishtwar district, during a pilgrimage. Days earlier, Uttarakhand experienced similar devastation with a flood and mudslide engulfing a village. Many pilgrims were washed away while gathered for lunch at a community kitchen. Search and rescue operations are underway, involving local police and army teams. The Indian Meteorological Department warns of potential mudslides and flash floods in the region, urging residents to avoid unstable structures.
The incident in the town of Chashoti, Kishtwar district, occurred at a stopover point on a pilgrimage route, where days earlier, a flood and mudslide engulfed an entire village in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.
A large number of pilgrims had gathered for lunch and they were washed away, according to local officials who reported on the extent of the disaster at a popular pilgrimage site.
Search and rescue operations are under way, as teams from the Army air force and local police have been activated to assist with the aftermath of the cloudburst.
A cloudburst is defined as a sudden, intense downpour of more than 100mm of rain in just one hour, which can result in severe flooding and landslides.
