Stephen Friedman to close New York gallery, two years after opening the Tribeca space
"The New York space opened in October 2023, after undergoing an extensive and costly renovation, with an exhibition by Deborah Roberts. It has since hosted shows featuring international artists including Anne Rothenstein, Sarah Ball, Denzil Forrester and Andreas Eriksson. The artist and indigenous activist Santiago Yahuarcani currently has her first New York show in the venue (until 17 January)."
"The closure marks the latest gallery casualty in a challenging market. Last week it was announced that Sperone Westwater is closing after 50 years-seemingly less to do as much with market dynamics and more so with a lawsuit between the co-founders. In the US, long-standing galleries including Blum, Venus over Manhattan and Clearing have also shuttered. The turbulent climate was noted in Friedman's latest filings on Companies House, which were submitted late, earning the gallery a first Gazette notice for compulsory strike-off in March-a public warning that a company is at risk of being dissolved."
Stephen Friedman will close his New York gallery at the end of February 2026, less than three years after opening in Tribeca. The gallery framed the decision as a strategic evolution to consolidate operations in London, where several new directors have been hired, and to focus resources on areas of greatest impact and flexibility while continuing international work. Friedman will remain engaged with the US art scene through participation in major fairs and relationships with artists, museums and collectors. The New York roster and estates will remain unchanged amid a challenging US gallery market.
