Staple bookstore to close one of last Bay Area locations after over 20 years
"It is with great sadness that we confirm the closure of our Barnes & Noble bookstore as our lease has ended. We have loved being a part of this neighborhood, and it has been our honor and privilege to be your bookseller for the last 20 years."
"In 2022, the Pasadena-based firm Alexandria Real Estate bought the 44-acre property where the shopping center currently stands for $328 million. The firm plans to develop 2 million square feet of office space and at least 1,000 homes at the site, which is next to the San Bruno BART station on El Camino Real."
"San Bruno's city manager, Jovan Grogan, attributed the mall's slow death to the retail apocalypse, exacerbated by the pandemic and a major shift to online shopping. Construction on the new development is slated to kick off in 2027."
The San Bruno Barnes & Noble, one of the Bay Area's last remaining locations, is closing after more than two decades of operation as its lease ends. The Shops at Tanforan mall, where the bookstore operates, was purchased by Alexandria Real Estate in 2022 for $328 million to develop 2 million square feet of office space and at least 1,000 homes. San Bruno's city manager attributed the mall's decline to the retail apocalypse, accelerated by the pandemic and increased online shopping. Construction on the new development begins in 2027. Barnes & Noble, founded in 1873, expanded significantly throughout the U.S. and peaked in the late 2000s before facing industry-wide challenges.
