SSE unveils 33bn plan to upgrade UK electricity networks with 2bn investor backing
"Our plans are built on a once-in-a-generation opportunity to upgrade the UK electricity network,"
"The accelerated investment is underpinned by secure UK government regulatory fram"
"critical to connecting renewables and removing existing constraints within the electricity grid."
SSE announced a five-year, £33 billion investment programme running to 2029-30 to modernise the UK electricity system. The plan will raise £2 billion through a share placing and generate £2 billion from targeted asset sales to fund expansion. Annual investment will treble with about 80% allocated to regulated electricity networks. The programme commits £22 billion to high-voltage transmission upgrades, £5 billion to regional distribution, £4 billion to renewables (primarily wind and hydro) and £2 billion to flexible gas generation and other business areas. The strategy aims to deliver cleaner, more secure and affordable energy and stimulate economic growth.
