The visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of high-level bilateral ties between Spain and China. Xi described Felipe as a "good friend of the Chinese people." The monarch said a "relationship of trust has been forged" between the two countries. Felipe and Queen Letizia arrived at the Great Hall of the People and met Xi alongside foreign minister Wang Yi and commerce minister Wang Wentao. China is Spain's largest trading partner in Asia and its fourth largest globally. Felipe previously visited China for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and his father Juan Carlos first made a state visit in 1978 and last visited in 2007 when he met Hu Jintao.
