"Though my decision stems directly from the ruling, I'm convinced that I've faithfully served the institution to which I am honoured to belong, with an unequivocal vocation for public service, a sense of duty and institutional loyalty,"
"We respect the court's decision but do not agree with it,"
Alvaro Garcia Ortiz resigned as Spain's chief prosecutor after the supreme court found him guilty of leaking confidential information in a case involving a leading opposition figure's partner. The ruling includes a two-year ban from his post. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez appointed Garcia Ortiz in 2022 and had repeatedly defended his innocence. Garcia Ortiz said his resignation stems from respect for judicial rulings while asserting that he faithfully served the institution with a vocation for public service, duty and institutional loyalty. The court has not yet released its rationale and Garcia Ortiz may appeal to higher courts, including the European Court of Human Rights.
