Spain threatens to withdraw from Eurovision if Israel takes part as BBC boss says song contest has 'never been about politics'
"From a BBC point of view, we're very aware of the concerns. Eurovision never has been about politics and should be a celebration of music and culture that brings people together. That is really important, that we try and preserve throughout, but at this stage, I'm supporting the European Broadcasting Union's work, and they need to get on with it."
"It comes after RTÉ, and Dutch broadcaster AVROTOS, stated they intended to boycott the contest unless Israel withdraws. It is significant that Spain has threatened to withdraw as it is one of the 'Big Five' alongside the UK, France, Germany and Italy. The broadcasters of these countries contribute the most financially to the annual contest and automatically qualify for the Grand Final."
Spain's public broadcaster announced it will not compete in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel participates. RTÉ and Dutch broadcaster AVROTOS stated intentions to boycott unless Israel withdraws. Spain is a member of the 'Big Five', alongside the UK, France, Germany and Italy, which contribute most financially and automatically qualify for the Grand Final. BBC board member Mr Davie emphasized that Eurovision should remain apolitical and cultural, and said the European Broadcasting Union must resolve detailed issues before broadcasters decide. The BBC said it will consider public views and has faced calls from political leaders and musicians urging a boycott.
