"Carbon monoxide -- which can be deadly -- is a gas that has no odor, taste or color. It comes from burning fuels, including gasoline, wood, propane or charcoal. Appliances and engines that aren't well vented can cause the carbon monoxide to build up to dangerous levels. A tightly enclosed space makes the buildup worse."
Six individuals were hospitalized in Brooklyn after exposure to carbon monoxide from a leak discovered in row homes on Kings Highway near Avenue J in the Flatlands neighborhood on Saturday morning. Two victims sustained serious injuries while four others experienced minor injuries. All patients are expected to make full recoveries. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas produced by burning fuels such as gasoline, wood, propane, and charcoal. Poorly ventilated appliances and engines allow dangerous levels to accumulate, with risk intensifying in tightly enclosed spaces. The specific source of the leak remains under investigation.
