""To be honest, there are houses located on the edge of the landslide that obviously can no longer be inhabited, so we need to work with the mayor to find a permanent relocation for these families," civil protection chief Fabio Ciciliano said."
""The entire hill is collapsing onto the plain of Gela," Ciciliano said."
On January 28, 2026, a massive landslide in Niscemi, southern Sicily tore away part of the town's edge after days of heavy rain. The landslide spanned roughly 4 kilometers and prompted civil protection crews to establish a 150-meter-wide no-go zone. More than 1,500 residents were evacuated and several cars and buildings were carried about 20 meters down the slope. Many homes remain precariously perched on unstable sand and clay layers and cannot be reoccupied, requiring permanent relocations for affected families. The government declared a state of emergency, allocated an initial €100 million, and warned recovery costs may run into the billions.
