An unknown gunman fired at him in a residential building in northwest Moscow, and the Russian Investigative Committee is carrying out searches to identify those responsible. Alekseyev has been accused of playing a major role in the Salisbury poisonings of former double agent Sergei Skripal for British intelligence. He was sent by Vladimir Putin to negotiate with Yevgeny Prigoshin during Prigoshin's 2023 attempted coup. Since February 2022 several high-ranking Russian military officials have been killed amid claims of Ukrainian involvement.
