Laurent Vinatier, 49, was arrested by the FSB at a Moscow restaurant in June 2024 and convicted four months later for breaking laws requiring individuals deemed foreign agents to register with Russian authorities. While jailed he was placed under additional investigation for espionage and faced a likely further trial. The FSB accused him of acting on instructions from Swiss intelligence and collecting sensitive political and military information, including combat and training plans. Vinatier was pardoned by President Vladimir Putin and swapped for Russian basketball player Daniil Kasatkin, who had been jailed in France and sought for alleged ransomware involvement. President Emmanuel Macron expressed relief and thanked diplomatic agents for their mobilisation.
