Cologne Bonn Airport customs officials uncovered approximately 1,500 tarantulas smuggled in boxes meant for chocolate cake. A noticeable smell led to the inspection. Most of the tarantulas were alive when discovered and were placed in professional care, although many did not survive. The act violates Germany's animal welfare laws, and an investigation is underway against both the sender in Vietnam and the recipient in Sauerland for not declaring the animals.
