Part of the 13th-century Torre dei Conti near the Colosseum partly collapsed during restoration work around midday, with a second partial collapse about 90 minutes later. Three workers inside the tower at the time managed to escape; one was hospitalized in critical condition. A Romanian worker remained trapped and conscious during a lengthy rescue operation before being pulled from the rubble and taken to hospital. Resuscitation attempts lasted about an hour but spontaneous cardiac activity could not be restored; death was pronounced at 12:20 am (2320 GMT). Firefighters faced complex access challenges, additional collapses and smoke, and used drones to locate the trapped worker.
