Revealed: Thousands of people who claimed illness benefit in 2009 still receiving payment
Total number of recipients is lower than in 2015. More than 4,000 people who claimed illness benefit over a decade ago are still receiving the payment. Department of Social Protection recorded 4,641 people have received the benefit since 2009. The illness benefit can be worth up to €254 per week. New rules limit entitlement for those claiming since 2009 to a maximum duration of two years. Recipients who claimed before the rule change remain in payment beyond a decade in some cases. A long-term cohort continues to receive welfare payments despite time passed.
