Report on renaming Dublin's Herzog Park withdrawn by Council boss ahead of Monday meeting
"Therefore, in the circumstances I am proposing to withdraw the report from the Agenda with a recommendation that the matter be referred back to the Commemorations and Naming Committee for consideration of the statutory procedure. On behalf of the Executive of the City Council, I wish to apologise for this administrative oversight. A detailed review of the administrative mis-steps will now be undertaken and a report furnished to the Lord Mayor and Councillors."
"conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism."
"an insult to Jewish people, to Palestinians, and to the basic principles of historical truth."
"'a cesspool of antisemitism'"
A motion to rename Herzog Park in Rathgar prompted domestic and international controversy and was withdrawn from the council agenda after the report was found to be missing information and described as an "administrative oversight". The park commemorates Chaim Herzog, who was born in Belfast, raised in Dublin, and served as president of Israel from 1983 to 1993. Sinn Féin councillor Kourtney Kenny tabled a June 2024 motion to change the name to Hind Rajab Park to commemorate a six-year-old. Critics labelled the proposal antisemitic while supporters said critics were conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism. Political figures including the Taoiseach and international voices reacted strongly, and the council pledged a detailed review and referral back to the Commemorations and Naming Committee.
