Protest held at Gallerie degli Uffizi after change in ticketing contract leaves temporary staff out of work
"No more precarious lives"
"New Year's resolution: continue working together with the workers of the Uffizi Galleries,"
"Florence's tourism economy cannot continue to rely on low-paid and precarious work,"
"It's time that all temporary workers are given permanent contracts."
Over 100 workers protested at the Uffizi in Florence after temporary staff were not rehired following a change in service provider. Protesters carried placards, flags and flares and gathered behind a banner reading "No more precarious lives". Trade union Sudd Cobas organised the demonstration and framed demands around work, city life and culture. The dispute began when Opera Laboratori Fiorentini was replaced by CoopCulture in September; permanent employees retained jobs while some temporary staff in security, ticketing, reception, the bookshop and cloakroom were not rehired. The union says seasonal nine-month workers were replaced by on-call contracts, including long-serving seasonal staff. The union demanded permanent contracts; CoopCulture said it updated employment arrangements in full compliance with the tender notice.
