"Surrey Police: "We are cancelling our appeal to help find wanted 35-year-old William Smith who was released in error from HMP Wandsworth on Monday, 3 November. "Smith handed himself in to HMP Wandsworth today." According to ITV News, which filmed his return, he was accompanied by his partner, who he hugged before speaking to prison staff at the prison's entrance. Brahim Kaddour-Cherif was serving a sentence at Wandsworth for trespass with intent to steal, but had previously also been convicted for indecent exposure."
Police are searching for Algerian national Brahim Kaddour-Cherif after he was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth on October 29. A separate inmate, Billy Smith (35), handed himself back three days after his accidental release; Smith had been sentenced to 45 months for multiple fraud offences. Surrey Police cancelled their appeal to find Smith after he returned, which ITV News filmed. Kaddour-Cherif was serving a sentence for trespass with intent to steal and has previous convictions for indecent exposure. He is not an asylum-seeker and faces deportation after overstaying his visa. The justice minister ordered meetings with prison chiefs and a digital review to replace paper-based prisoner records.
