""I told my wife: 'We're all going to die here'," he said. "It picked up a brutal speed, took a slight turn and hit the building with a loud bang.""

""The traction cable linking them had snapped.""
A yellow tram-like funicular carriage in Lisbon left the track and struck a building after plunging down a steep 265-metre slope when the traction cable linking the twin cars snapped. Fifteen people died at the scene and one more died in hospital, while 38 were injured. About 40 passengers were in the lower car, including Lisbon resident Abel Esteves, his wife and grandson, who described the carriage picking up brutal speed before derailing. Flags flew at half-mast and Portugal declared a day of mourning. Two other funiculars were closed for inspection and an investigation is under way.
