A large stone wall collapsed on two men working near it about 5km outside Bandon in west Cork on Thursday afternoon. Both men were partially buried by debris; one was critically injured and later pronounced dead, a man in his 50s from the west Cork area. A second man in his 30s suffered serious crush injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to Cork University Hospital where he is believed to be in serious condition. GardaĆ are treating the incident as a freak workplace accident and the Health and Safety Authority will be notified. The Office of the State Pathologist was notified and a post mortem is scheduled at CUH with a coroner's inquest to follow next year. It is unclear if recent storms, heavy rainfall and flooding contributed to the collapse. Ireland recorded 33 workplace fatalities in 2024, the lowest since the HSA was established.
