Officials issue warning after rare venomous snake spotted in Attleboro
Briefly

Officials in Attleboro issued a warning about a copperhead snake sighting along the Ten Mile River near Milk Street after two dogs were bitten. Copperheads, although rare, can be found from southern New England to Illinois and are listed as an endangered species in Massachusetts. The copperhead is recognized for its triangular reddish-brown head and crossbands. Bites, while not fatal, require immediate medical attention and are painful. Residents are advised to keep a safe distance from any spotted snakes and contact the city's health department with concerns.
"Please be cautious when walking or running in this area, and keep your dogs close," officials said.
"The copperhead is one of Massachusetts' most mysterious and rare snakes," state wildlife officials wrote online.
"Most copperhead bites occur when people step on or touch one accidentally," officials wrote.
"Bites require immediate medical attention. They are painful and can cause tissue damage, but they are not fatal."
