On January 22, Howell drove southbound in the northbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway at speeds exceeding 50 mph, causing a head-on collision with Manuel Boitel, a 61-year-old Manhattan doorman returning home from work. Boitel died from his injuries. Police investigation revealed Howell's blood alcohol level was 0.18%, nearly double the legal limit of 0.08%. She had been returning from a social event. Howell was arraigned on March 2 and held on bond. She faces 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison if convicted and has been suspended without pay.
