Number of reported domestic violence cases hits peak in Germany

The rise in family violence -- which includes both intimate partner violence and the abuse of children -- may be driven in part by increased stress from unemployment, housing shortages and other problems, according to the BKA."

Domestic violence in Germany rose to record levels in 2024, with 265,942 people officially registered as victims and 70.4 percent female. A total of 286 people were killed in domestic attacks, including 191 women and 95 men. Suspects were 75.6 percent male. Official statistics exclude unreported incidents; research suggests only about five percent of intimate partner violence cases are reported. Reported domestic violence increased 3.8 percent from the prior year and 17.8 percent over five years. Economic and social stressors such as unemployment and housing shortages may contribute, while awareness campaigns and support services may raise reporting.
