"Despite being local elections, the campaign has been driven by national questions identity, minority rights and what it takes to unblock EU accession,"
"If we achieve national consensus and work intensely on reforms, no one and nothing will be able to stop us on the way to the EU,"
"General Urban Plan for 20222032"
Local elections across North Macedonia are being framed as a major test of the ruling government's strength and public patience with a prolonged EU accession blockade. Campaign debates have centered on national questions such as identity, minority rights, and how to unblock EU membership stalled largely by Bulgaria. Skopje faces unresolved municipal problems including the absence of a wastewater treatment plant, reliance on bus-only public transport, a delayed General Urban Plan for 2022–2032, and preparations for Skopje as European Capital of Culture 2028. Political rivals have traded blame over responsibility for the EU deadlock, and the opposition has pushed for a national resolution on accession positions by February 10, 2026.
