New Christmas tradition unlocked? 'Almost 70 years of nostalgia at Dublin's moving crib - I've never seen something so unique... and it's free'
""Next year we're doing a big refurbishment for the crib's 70th anniversary," he told the Irish Independent. He gave me a tour of the crib and explained that everything used to work seamlessly, but some of the tiny motors and engines of the figurines have stopped working over the years. "It's my job to make sure that they all work. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. As per usual, there's always something - our camel has stopped working," he added."
"'There's one family that come here and they're on their fourth generation of visiting,' he said. I see figurines dancing, a man fishing by the falls, rats spinning and a bunch of animals swaying their heads left and right. It really is a sight. No wonder people come back every year to re-visit nostalgia. For 69 years these figurines have been swinging and spinning. Scenes are featured from the story of Adam and Eve, the Ten Commandments and the Nativity"
The moving crib is located under the St Martin Apostolate shop on Dublin's Parnell Square and has been open since 1956. The display comprises 120 figurines across 13 biblical scenes and takes about 40 minutes to walk around. The figurines move by mechanical pulleys, strings, wires and tiny engines, many of which have worn or stopped over time. Darragh Murphy, general manager, maintains the mechanisms and plans a major refurbishment for the 70th anniversary. Multigenerational visitors return each year, sometimes across four generations. Scenes include Adam and Eve, the Ten Commandments and the Nativity, and moving figures provide a visual way to learn Bible stories.
