Germany, Sweden, Norway, France, the U.K. and the Netherlands are increasing military presence in Greenland. The Danish Armed Forces reported European nations mobilized forces for joint "exercise activity" to train troops to operate in unique Arctic conditions and strengthen NATO's footprint. Activities could include guarding critical infrastructure, hosting allied troops, deploying fighter aircraft and naval operations. Germany described contributions as exploratory to help keep transportation and trade routes free. Former President Donald Trump said NATO should not prevent the United States from taking control of Greenland. Article 5 treats an attack on one member as an attack on all, but responses can vary.
