Residents in central Victoria reported seeing a large meteor on Sunday night, described as an extremely bright fireball with accompanying loud noises. Witnesses shared videos and accounts on social media, with one individual, Saskia Reus-Smit, noting the meteor appeared low and detailed in color. Terrence Dale described seeing it with blue and red hues, while an astrophysicist confirmed it was indeed a fireball, brighter than Venus. The bright event was followed by a sonic boom, leading to speculation that fragments might have reached the ground.
"Saskia Reus-Smit, from Fryerstown, posted to the group that they had seen the meteor pass directly over my head, very low, seemed lower than a plane, close enough to see burning definition, like a volcanic rock burning orange."
"Astrophysicist and astronomer Prof Jonti Horner, from the University of Southern Queensland, confirmed it was a meteor that had lit up the sky, describing it as a 'fireball' due to its brightness."
