Met Éireann warned temperatures will plummet over the coming days, with inland higher ground potentially dropping to around minus 3C or lower. Ireland will largely avoid the worst Arctic conditions affecting parts of Europe, though some areas of Scotland may fall to about minus 9C. New Year's Eve will be frosty with fog or freezing fog slow to clear, then sunny spells and daytime highs of 2C to 6C. Conditions will remain colder than normal with risks of ice, frost, freezing fog and possible snow flurries on higher northern ground. Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority urged motorists to check lights, tyres and windscreen wash, allow extra travel time and be mindful of vulnerable road users. Atlantic coasts may see rain and drizzle Wednesday night, with lowest overnight temperatures between minus 2C and 3C and westerly winds gusting on northern coasts.
