Met Eireann issues status yellow snow-ice warning as temperatures could drop as low as -3C this weekend
""There will be the greater threat of ice on the roads," he said as the imminent cold snap is set to coincide with the reopening of schools and workplaces nationwide. "Because much of the country will be dry, the ice won't be that lethal in places but places where there are showers, you could see black ice in places and also where there is sleet and snow."
""Major roads will all be gritted, and they're always very well gritted, but on some of the more minor roads, the conditions will be will be more possibly treacherous underfoot and for cars traveling as well. "So overall, in general, the precautions to be taken are for people to take care, go slow, be aware that there will be frost and icy patches over the weekend and for some places in Ulster, north Connacht, possibly some sleet and snow as well.""
Temperatures may fall to around -3C tomorrow night with sharp to severe frosts developing over the weekend. A status yellow snow and ice warning is in place for Donegal from 8pm Friday until 11am Saturday, with wintry showers and some snow accumulations possible. Most areas will be crisp and dry, but widespread frost and icy patches are likely overnight with lows of -2C to 2C. Major roads will be gritted, while minor and untreated roads may become treacherous and risk black ice where showers, sleet or snow occur. Motorists should slow down and exercise caution, especially where surfaces are untreated.
