He served thirty years with An Garda Síochána, rising to the rank of Superintendent and acquiring broad insight and perspective on many issues. He reached thirty years' service in October and became eligible for retirement. Although he loves the job, he judged the moment appropriate for a new challenge. At 54 he considers himself still relatively young and seeks a new role that ignites passion and makes use of the skills developed throughout his policing career.
