McLaren will use team orders in quest for F1 world drivers' title in Abu Dhabi
"Yes, of course. We're realistic, we want to win this drivers' championship, the McLaren chief executive said. If we get into the race and it's becoming pretty clear that one has a chance and the other doesn't, we're going to do what we can to win. It would be crazy not to."
"Yes, our drivers have always complied with team wishes just as we comply with their wishes, he said. So I've got no doubt either of our drivers will continue to race, as they've done brilliantly, in the best interests of the team."
McLaren will use team orders for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri if required to secure the drivers' championship at Abu Dhabi. Max Verstappen trails Norris by ten points, with Verstappen still capable of taking the title; Piastri sits six points further back. Norris needs third place or better to clinch the championship outright. A likely team-orders scenario would see Piastri give up a position to Norris to guarantee a podium if Verstappen leads the race. McLaren has spent the season allowing open racing and aiming for fairness, and the team expects both drivers to comply with instructions and agreed plans.
