'Maybe he's being punished too much' - 'Crime World' co-host confirms he is tenant at centre of Jim Gavin controversy
"Niall Donald, a journalist with the Crime World podcast and Sunday World newspaper, has today confirmed that he is the person who was in dispute with Mr Gavin. He has decided to go public after his name began circulating social media in recent days. At the time of the dispute Mr Donald was a freelance journalist working shifts for €80 per day."
"Repeated efforts to get the former Dublin GAA manager to give back the repayment failed. At the weekend the Irish Independent revealed details of the dispute which subsequently led Mr Gavin to quit the presidential race saying he had made a mistake not in keeping with his character. Speaking to his co-host Nicola Tallant on the Crime World podcast, Mr Donald explained how the story came about and noted that he never expected it to have such an impact."
Niall Donald confirmed he was the tenant involved in a €3,300 rent repayment dispute with Mr Gavin. Donald was a freelance journalist earning €80 per day and rented a two-bedroom apartment for around two and a half years. A banking error caused him to continue paying €550 a month after moving out, and repeated efforts to secure repayment failed. Donald said newsroom colleagues and friends already knew the story and he decided to go public after his name circulated on social media. The Irish Independent investigated after Gavin’s nomination and Fianna Fáil initially said Gavin had no recollection.
