'Many arrested' after second night of violence at Citywest, justice minister says
"Uniformed gardaí were sporadically pelted with fireworks and other objects as they formed a line to block the entrance to the facility, before public order gardaí moved in front of their line with riot shields to block objects being thrown. While large parts of the crowd dispersed throughout the night, An Garda Siochana deployed an additional public order unit behind those remaining at the protest shortly after 10pm. Several of those caught between the two units were tackled and detained as they tried to flee."
""Members of An Garda Síochána have again bravely and professionally responded to thuggish violence at Citywest tonight," Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan said. "Many have been arrested and more will follow. They will be charged, named and dealt with relentlessly by our justice system," Mr O'Callaghan said. A large crowd has gathered at the entrance to the complex for a second night after scenes of violence on Tuesday. It is the third night of demonstrations at Citywest following an alleged sexual assault on a 10-year-old girl in the vicinity of the hotel in the early hours of Monday morning."
Nearly 300 gardaí were deployed to Citywest as large crowds gathered at the hotel entrance. Uniformed gardaí were sporadically pelted with fireworks, bricks, bottles and other missiles while forming a line to block the entrance. Public order units with riot shields moved in to protect the line and pushed protesters back, and an additional public order unit was deployed shortly after 10pm. Several people caught between two garda units were tackled and detained while attempting to flee. Seven people were arrested in connection with public disorder and one garda was hospitalised after sustaining an injury. A steel ring barricade was erected to keep protesters out.
