"Sierra was 15 years old on March 16, 2012, the day she vanished from her Morgan Hill home. That morning, she got ready for school as usual, replying to a friend's text at 7:11 a.m. and using her computer until 7:12. Her mother and her mother's boyfriend had both left the house when Sierra likely departed around 7:20 a.m. to catch the bus to Sobrato High School. But the bus passed her stop, and Sierra wasn't there."
"The next day, her phone was found near Santa Teresa Boulevard and Schellar Avenue, about a mile from her home, and a bag containing the clothes she wore that day was located a few blocks away. Detectives asked the public to be on the lookout for a red Volkswagen Jetta with a black hood that was seen on surveillance footage near the scene."
"Prosecutors later presented DNA evidence in court that linked a rope found in the car to Sierra's hair and DNA from Garcia-Torres on Sierra's jeans. There was no evidence the two knew each other prior to the day she disappeared. Although Sierra remained missing, prosecutors from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office moved forward with a murder case."
Sierra LaMar, 15, disappeared on March 16, 2012, from her Morgan Hill home while preparing for school. Her phone was found near Santa Teresa Boulevard, and a bag containing her clothes was discovered nearby. Police identified a red Volkswagen Jetta seen on surveillance footage near the scene, leading them to 21-year-old Antolin Garcia-Torres. Prosecutors presented DNA evidence linking a rope found in his car to Sierra's hair and DNA from Garcia-Torres on her jeans. Although Sierra remained missing, prosecutors charged Garcia-Torres with murder. A California appeals court recently overturned his conviction, allowing for a new trial in this significant Bay Area case.
