He is one of an estimated 1.2 million people who claimed asylum in Greece between 2015 and 2020."
"A 2024 report by the International Organization for Migration found that 63 percent of recent arrivals to Europe were single men travelling alone. The Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford in 2026 noted that male refugees often travel alone due to the perils of the journey, and family and children join them later. Young people like Ahmed also make up a small but significant proportion of applicants."
Many lone male migrants, including unaccompanied minors, undertake dangerous overland journeys from Afghanistan and other countries to reach Europe, often passing through Turkiye and Greece before moving north. A rising hard-right political climate in Europe increasingly frames lone, male asylum seekers as a societal scourge, exposing them to discrimination, suspicion, hatred and homelessness. International data show a majority of recent arrivals are single men and tens of thousands of asylum applicants are unaccompanied minors. Families frequently send young people because they believe youth have better chances of reaching and being accepted in Europe. Some young migrants continue schooling while facing stigma.
