Mairead McGuinness predicts 'full on' campaign as she gets nod to be Fine Gael's presidential candidate
Briefly

Ms McGuinness has emerged as the only candidate for the Fine Gael nomination for the presidency, with her campaign set to begin in September. In a letter to party members, she acknowledged the significant role of the presidency and invited members to rest before the campaign begins. She will share her vision for the presidency shortly. To secure nomination, candidates required support from 20 parliamentary members, 25 councillors, and five members of the executive council. McGuinness previously served as an MEP and EU Commissioner. Other candidates include independent Catherine Connolly.
I am conscious of the opportunity and challenge ahead, given the very important constitutional role of the President, and the esteem in which the office is held by the people.
The campaign when it starts will be full-on.
I do hope that you manage to get to enjoy some down time with family and friends before September.
However, Ms McGuinness was the only person to put herself forward.
