Louth County Council will begin annual payments of €100,000 to clear the debt accumulated from hosting the Fleadh. The accumulated bill arose unexpectedly because of Covid, leaving the council with more than €1 million in costs. The National Oversight and Audit Commission advised the council to address the debt. Councillors previously voted against writing off the debt in 2021 and have sought a detailed breakdown of accounts. Councillors demanded strengthened financial oversight, independent assessment before major expenditure, and clearer communication. The Director of Service said festivals must present a business case and that financial restraints are in place.
