Lithuanian president says Russian jets violated the country's airspace
"Incursion follows series of drone incidents and airspace violations that have prompted fears that Russia is testing NATO. Two Russian military aircraft have briefly entered Lithuania's airspace in what appeared to be a new provocation from Moscow as European Union leaders discussed how to strengthen their defences amid deepening concerns the war in Ukraine could spill over into their nations."
"The incident occurred after Nauseda and his fellow EU leaders attended a Brussels summit on Thursday, endorsing a plan dubbed Readiness 2030 to ensure that Europe can defend itself against an outside attack by the end of the decade."
Two Russian military aircraft briefly entered Lithuanian airspace, penetrating about 700 metres at around 18:00 local time. The aircraft were identified as an Su-30 fighter and an Il-78 refuelling tanker, possibly conducting refuelling exercises from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Lithuania called the incursion a blatant breach of territorial integrity and said it would summon Russian embassy representatives to protest. Two Spanish Eurofighter Typhoons from NATO Baltic Air Police scrambled and patrolled the area. Russia's Defence Ministry denied any border violation, saying the flights complied with rules. The incident comes amid recent drone incidents and airspace violations that have raised fears of Russian testing of NATO.
