LATEST: One trapped after tower collapse at Rome's Imperial Forums
"It was not safe. I just want to go home," said the man, white dust covering his uniform, who gave his name as Ottaviano and his age as 67."
"On behalf of myself and the Lazio region, I express our deepest sympathy to the worker seriously injured today at the Torre dei Conti site and to the other workers involved in the collapse," Lazio's regional President Francesco Rocca wrote on Facebook."
Part of the medieval Torre dei Conti in Rome collapsed during EU-funded restoration works just after 11:30 a.m., trapping workers under rubble. Three workers were rescued from beneath the collapsed structure, while a fourth remained trapped but reportedly alive and conscious. A second collapse occurred about two hours later, showering debris onto firefighters conducting rescue operations; no firefighters were reported injured. One rescued worker, aged 64, was taken to San Giovanni Hospital with a critical head injury. City and regional officials, including the mayor and culture minister, were present at the scene and a prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the cause.
