King Charles gives award to LockBit takedown architect
"The National Crime Agency's (NCA) Gavin Webb was among the names on the King's most recent New Year Honours list for 2026. Webb was given an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) award."
"The NCA told The Register that Webb, 51, held a strategic coordinating role in Operation Cronos, described as the UK lead on the NCA-spearheaded international law enforcement operation responsible for disrupting LockBit."
"Webb is a police officer by trade, not a techie, and did not have a hands-on-keyboard impact as Cronos infiltrated LockBit's website, turning Dmitry Khoroshev's infrastructure against him, although he pulled the strings behind the scenes."
Gavin Webb, 51, received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his role in Operation Cronos. He held a strategic coordinating role as the UK lead on the NCA-led international law enforcement effort that disrupted LockBit. Webb is a police officer by trade and took a leadership and orchestration role rather than carrying out technical infiltration. His duties included coordinating international and domestic policing forces, ensuring information sharing, sequencing actions, and verifying that participating agencies executed tasks in the correct order. LockBit was a dominant RaaS platform in 2023–2024, causing a quarter of ransomware attacks and billions in damage.
