The International Judo Federation's executive committee voted to end the restriction that had required Russian judokas to compete under a neutral banner since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The lift is effective immediately and allows Russian athletes to compete under their national flag at international events, including the Grand Slam 2025 in Abu Dhabi on November 28. The IJF framed sport as a bridge between peoples and said athletes are not responsible for government decisions, stating reinstatement reflects confidence in ethical safeguards and the sport's integrity. The IJF cited its prior lifting of sanctions on Belarus in May. Russia welcomed the decision, while the Ukrainian Judo Federation criticized it as a blatant violation of IOC recommendations.
