Jonas Vingegaard powers to Vuelta stage nine win with Valdezcaray climb

Jonas Vingegaard won stage nine of the Vuelta a España with a solo attack on the 13.2km category one climb to the Valdezcaray ski resort, concluding the 195.5km stage from Alfaro. Vingegaard overcame a mid-stage mechanical issue and rejoined the peloton with 75km remaining before his decisive move with 11km to go. Tom Pidcock and Joao Almeida chased but finished 24 seconds back. Torstein Tren fell behind on the climb but launched a late attack to finish 1min 46sec down and retained the red jersey, 37 seconds clear overall. Earlier breakaway riders built a two-minute advantage amid heavy rain.
I felt great today, and I felt amazing on the final climb. I asked them to accelerate, and they did a great job. It was fantastic teamwork, and I'm very happy that I was able to finish it off, the 28-year-old Dane said.
Vingegaard, who had a mechanical issue during the stage but caught up with the peloton again with 75km to go, said he knew it was his day when he put his team at the front for the final climb.
The Norwegian Tren, who had fallen behind the peloton during the climb, launched a late attack in the final 3km to finish 1min 46sec behind Vingegaard, retaining the red jersey.
