"Fianna Fáil has voted for former All-Ireland-winning Dublin football manager Jim Gavin to be its candidate in next month's presidential election. It is understood that Mr Gavin won the presidential nomination by 41 votes to 29 at a special meeting of the party's parliamentary party in Leinster House this morning."
Fianna Fáil's parliamentary party held a vote to choose its presidential candidate between former All-Ireland-winning Dublin football manager Jim Gavin and Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher. Jim Gavin won the nomination by 41 votes to 29 at a special meeting in Leinster House. The nomination makes Gavin the party's candidate for next month's presidential election. Some party members regarded Kelleher's 29 votes as a blow to the leadership of Micheál Martin, who lobbied hard for Gavin. Micheál Martin and Billy Kelleher dismissed the notion that the vote amounted to a referendum on the Fianna Fáil leader.
