'It's a miracle': San Francisco teacher attacked in Italy returns to the US, recovering
Briefly

Nicholas Pellegrino, a teacher and track coach, survived a stabbing attack in Milan on July 15 while traveling. Four men attacked him on a train, resulting in serious injuries. Pellegrino lost a significant amount of blood but, by his account, was fortunate to survive without a complete severance of his jugular vein. Expressing thankfulness, he returned home and acknowledged the strong support from his community and students, leading to a GoFundMe campaign. His faith strengthened after the incident, he felt compelled to express gratitude at a basilica upon his release from the hospital.
"At first it's the fear. Am I going to live? Then it's the emotional reaction of 'OK I made it,' said Pellegrino. "When the nurses tell you that you lose, I lost, a liter-and-a-half of blood. It's a miracle that I'm here now."
"That was the grace of God alone that I'm ensured here," Pellegrino stated, referring to his near-fatal injury where his left jugular vein was nicked but not fully severed.
"I cried my eyes out in thanks," said Pellegrino about his emotional moment at the basilica after being released from the hospital. "I went right to the Lord and I thanked him."
A former student started a GoFundMe page for Pellegrino, which had a goal of $5,000 but exceeded $56,000.
