Italy approves plan to speed up overseas citizenship claims
"Up until now, applicants for descent-based citizenship living outside Italy have applied through their nearest Italian consulate, a process usually involving in-person appointments. While few details are currently available about how the new system would work in practice, the bill says that applications would be sent to Italy "exclusively by post, with the costs of postage and any other related services to be borne by the applicant.""
"The bill's stated aim in creating a dedicated department was to make the process more efficient. The General Council of Italians Abroad (CGIE), however, has expressed fears that the change poses "a concrete risk of slowing down procedures and losing the expertise acquired by the consulates." The requirement for "paper documentation sent by post, often from countries that only issue digital certificates, risks compromising the efficiency and reliability of the entire system," it said."
A draft law would create a centralised office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to process ius sanguinis applications filed overseas beginning next year. Applicants abroad would no longer apply through local consulates and would have to send paperwork exclusively by post, with postage and related costs borne by the applicant. The government cites growing consular strain and rising application numbers, especially from Argentina and Brazil, causing backlogs and delays. The bill aims to improve efficiency. The General Council of Italians Abroad warned of risks including slower procedures, loss of consular expertise, and problems when countries issue only digital certificates.
