"Templeogue star Ellen Walshe, who won her first gold on an international stage, told of how it was "super special" to glance up from the pool after touching the wall in the 200m butterfly and see her dad waving the Irish flag with pride. "I'm absolutely delighted to come away with some medals. It was a real focus of mine to get myself on the podium," she told the Irish Independent."
""It's great to be home. The support I have here is fantastic and I've a great community around me that really push me on," she said, sharing a medal with her emotional mother Michelle for a photograph. "It was brilliant seeing Ellen on the top of the podium and we were delighted to be out there as well. The swim team did absolutely brilliant, and it was great to see the Irish flag up there and hear the anthem."
Irish swimmers returned from the European Aquatics Short Course Championships in Lublin with three golds, one silver and three bronze medals. Ellen Walshe won gold in the 200m butterfly and silver in the 200m individual medley, becoming the first Irish woman to win a European Short Course title. Daniel Wiffen claimed gold in the 1500m freestyle and bronze in the 400m and 800m freestyles. John Shortt won the 200m backstroke. Family, friends and community greeted the team at the airport with cheers and hugs; Walshe saw her father waving the Irish flag and stood on the podium as the anthem played.
