Early autumn in Chisinau alternates heavy downpours with hot, cloudless days as the general election approaches. Opinion polls indicate a tight race between President Maia Sandu's pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) and several pro-Russian parties. The center of Chisinau is crowded with campaigners who approach passers-by and distribute flyers and campaign newspapers outlining party policies and pledges. One PAS campaigner, 35-year-old Cristian, hands out the party's yellow newspaper on Stefan-cel-Mare-Boulevard and expresses hope that Moldova will join the EU, raising wages, increasing independence, and enabling projects such as digitalization. Nearby, 50-year-old Vitalie campaigns for Our Party, led by controversial businessman Renato Usatii.
